For the past six years, The Gourmet Spoon has conducted Culinary Techniques Workshops for some of Denver’s finest schools.
We start with an introductory meeting, then put together a format that focuses on the students ages and skill levels. From there, we do programs from one to six days, educating the students in a wide variety of culinary skills and styles. In our young peoples’s programs, we start by teaching simple recipes and cooking skills, to help them begin to appreciate the joy of feeding themselves, their friends and family.
For pre-teens, menus include spaghetti and meatballs, quesadillas, macaroni and cheese and, of course, cookies and brownies.
Middle and high school students are ready to take on true kitchen skills. In their workshops, they will learn the fundamentals of saut?ing, roasting, knife skills, blanching, poaching, baking etc. and gain the expertise to approach almost any recipe with confidence.
Additional workshops focus on regional and ethnic cuisines, such as Italian, French, Pacific Rim, Mexican and Mediterranean styles. No matter the age or level of interest, The Gourmet Spoon will enlighten and delight your class.
A few current and former cients include Bright Horizons/Seven Oaks Academy; The Ricks Center at Denver University; Colorado Academy; Denver Academy; and The Challenge School.
- "Charismatic and caring Chef Dan Witherspoon has offered the students of Ricks Center for Gifted Children exciting and instructive culinary adventures for the past four years. I have immensely enjoyed working with Dan from the planning stages through the actual classes to the final banquet that we held for the families of our students at the conclusion of each Intersession period. Knowledgeable about cuisines around the world, Dan has put together menus that included engaging opportunities for aspiring young chefs to hone their skills and techniques. Just as importantly Dan has created an atmosphere in the kitchen-classroom that developed team work and camaraderie among the students while also offering them challenges that they were extremely proud of meeting. Students have learned everything from designing menus to setting up for banquets. Ricks Center students have so enjoyed Dan’s classes that many of them have signed up to take every single one for the past four years and several have purchased private lessons with him. Professional and personable, Chef Dan’s classes are an ideal learning environment for students of all ages." ~ Pam R
